Preventive Cleanings and Exams

Early intervention can catch problems when they are smaller and easier to correct. Or, proactive measures can be taken to prevent problems from occurring at all.

Most of our patients with healthy smiles can benefit from a preventive care appointment every 6 months. During these visits, our office provides:

Dr. Ricotta thoroughly examines all teeth and existing restorations during every checkup. If something suspicious is noted, we will even show you the area on our HD intraoral camera so that you can co-plan your treatment alongside us.

Preventive cleanings lift away calcified bacteria, stain, and plaque biofilm from the teeth above and just below the gumlines. It also provides us with an opportunity to work with you to create an oral care plan that limits your risk to tooth decay or gum disease.

Diagnodent Cavity Detection

Diagnodent laser cavity detection allows us to pinpoint tooth decay in the deep biting surfaces of the back teeth. We frequently use it to screen for cavities with deep grooves, where traditional instrumentation or visual access is limited.

Digital X-Rays

Low radiation digital x-rays allow Dr. Ricotta to pinpoint concerns such as:

  • Bone loss
  • Cavities between teeth
  • Dental abscesses
  • Cavities deep below the biting surface
  • Abnormalities within the bone
  • Development and anatomy of the jaw and TMJ

Fluoride Treatments

We recommend a fluoride treatment on all patients following their preventive cleaning. Fluoride varnish is useful for preventing enamel demineralization, sensitivity in areas of gum recession, and reducing tooth decay around crowns, bridges, and fillings. Dr. Ricotta also recommends placing fluoride around fixed orthodontic appliances to prevent “white spots” from developing.

Mouth Guards / Night Guards

Mouth guards are also useful to wear during athletic activities to prevent problems like emergencies as well as concussions.
